A recent trend in games is the addition of cross-platform play, allowing PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch players to group up together regardless of platform. This guide will detail everything you need to know about cross-platform play in Overwatch 2, so you can start enjoying the game with friends on different platforms.

Quick take

Overwatch 2 supports crossplay, allowing players on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch to group up together. Overwatch 2 players can invite friends on different platforms using their BattleTags, but PC and console players cannot matchmake together in the Competitive ranked playlist.

Does Overwatch 2 Support Cross-Platform Play?

The short answer is YES, Overwatch 2 supports crossplay, the ability to play with friends on any platform. In Overwatch 2, players on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch can group up together and play, with one caveat.

Console players (PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch) cannot play with PC players in the Competitive playlist. Blizzard, the developer of Overwatch 2, wants to keep console and PC players separate due to the skill gap that exists between both platforms. PC players can play with friends on console in any other casual playlist, including Quick Play.

How to Enable Cross-Platform in Overwatch 2

Overwatch crossplay is enabled by default, no matter the platform you play on. Console players (PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch) are placed in the same matchmaking pool by default.

Console players will only be placed in the same matchmaking pool as PC players if they are partied up with one or more PC players. Console and PC players are not placed in the same matchmaking pool automatically because of the difference in capabilities between the controller input and the mouse and keyboard input.

To invite friends on a different platform, you first need to add them as a friend. To add friends, go to the Social tab, select Add Friend, and enter their BattleTag. Their BattleTag will be a name followed by a hashtag and four numbers. A BattleTag is separate from an Xbox gamertag or PlayStation ID.
