Refresh Rate

Refresh rate is the number of times per second a display updates its image, and it determines the latency, smoothness, and clarity of the image on the screen. Higher refresh rate monitors are always better but check to ensure your setup can reach the monitor’s full potential. For instance, if you choose a monitor with a 240 Hz refresh rate, but your PC runs most games at 100 FPS, that monitor is likely overkill for your current setup.

Response Time

Response time is how long it takes for an individual pixel on the monitor to change color. As the refresh rate (Hz) increases, the response time must be low enough to update the image accordingly. For competitive FPS players, look for gaming monitors with response times of less than 2ms.


The current resolution standard for FPS games is 1920x1080p, but 2560x1440p and 4K are becoming more common as PC/console hardware improves. When choosing a monitor resolution for FPS games ask yourself: What resolution can my current PC/console handle? Do I care more about graphical fidelity or gaining a competitive edge?
