Steam recently updated their Purchasing Issues FAQs, adding a question: “PayPal use on Steam is currently unavailable in my currency. Why?”
As reported previously, this is an effect of the ongoing NSFW content issue that Steam is undergoing against payment processors PayPal, Mastercard, and Visa. This was a domino effect that started as a call to ban NSFW games from being purchased on the games distribution giant.
According to game journalism website IGN, Valve, the parent company of Steam, has recently released a statement saying that it “hoped to offer PayPal as an option for these currencies,” referring to countries that are affected by the payments processor ban. Further adding, “we are also evaluating adding additional payment methods on Steam for customers affected by it.”
PayPal has pulled the plug on processing Steam payments except for the following currencies: EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD, and USD.
Valve also added that “PayPal notified Valve that their acquiring bank for payment transactions in certain currencies was immediately terminating the processing of any transactions related to Steam,” which signals the escalating matter of this issue.
